General Information
In May 2003,
the State of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) decided to adopt the UK Ministry
of Defence proposal for the establishment of a Peace Support Operations
Training Centre (PSOTC) situated in Sarajevo.
The UK was thelead nation for the consortium of partners
willing to fund the establishment of the Training Centre. The Centre is planned to be handed-over from the partners
to Bosnia-Herzegovina to lead and run the Centre - preferably still with
an international staff for some years to come.
The PSOTC school building is placed inside the compounds of NATO Headquarters
in Sarajevo (NHQSA) named Camp Butmir. The Centre's core course is the PSO Staff Course on principles, procedures, planning and
executing of international peace support operations. The course is
designed for 40 lieutenants/ captains and young majors, approximately
30 from Bosnia-Herzegovina and 10 from other interested countries from
the West Balkans Region and the Partners. The courses are taught and supported by an international
faculty and staff, provided be the partners, Bosnia-Herzegovina and eventually
other countries subject to additional consensus decisions on a case-by-case
basis.
Last but not
least, accommodation and messing for the students and part of the civilian
staff are provided by NHQSA on a repayment basis in already existing buildings
inside Camp Butmir.
